Now Showing at "The Palais"....

Hello Dhaaarlings...

Its Movie Clip Wednesday again and this week Milk River Madman has pulled one out of the Gucci sports bag with the theme

"Favourite Sports Movie"

So rather than post something that you possibly will have aaall seen and maybe even seen it a couple of times I'm going with something that is truly an
"Aussie Ariginal"

Initially written as a play by David Williamson
In 1977. In 1980 The Club was turned into a movie starring many old hands of Australian stage and screen and some new up and coming actors.
The film is based on the behind the scenes machinations of a National football team with all the bullshit and backstabbing powerplays that happen when you get a room full of Alpha Males and far too much testosterone.

The movie also had many of the actual football players from the real "Collingwood Football Club"  Team of that era who appeared in actual footage of games and in cameo appearances in the movie.

Collingwood is more commonly known to its fans as "The Magpies" "The Maggies" "The Pies" or more popularly by everyone else as...

"That fucking team of dirty cunts"

Collingwood just happens to be the Club that everyone still loves to hate.
And to make matters worse this year they ended up as Premiers.
Booooo....
In the lead up to the Grand final a website here was signing up people to book a flight out of the country for the week if Collingwood won.
Mainly because all the one eyed fans come out of the woodwork in celebration of a win... otherwise you never see them let alone get them to admit they're a fan....They had so many hits the site crashed!!

Anyway I present for your brief entertainment...

The Club....

Happy Movie Clip Wednesday

  2. I've seen a lot of Australian movies, but not this one. So by football, you mean, soccer, right? Not rugby, which is just, rugby? Gah. I get so confused when I try to cross the pond. Happy MCW anyway!

  3. I'm with Moi. Football, soccer, rugby...I can't tell the difference. I go to watch THe Pudge's soccer game every week and I really have no idea what's going on. But he likes it and he does score the occasional goal. I think that's whay we have American Football, because of the scoring, well and the hitting too. This looks like a good movie. Sort of a cross between North Dallas Forty and Any Given Sunday - translating it for us Americans.

    Happy MCW!

  4. Good morning Princess,

Fun clip, whatever sport it turns out to be. It is rugby right? The balls not round, like a soccer ball.

    Happy clip day!

  5. Dear Beast,Moi, BuzzKill and Karl
The game being played is "Australian Rules Football"
It would take me forever to explain to you the game in all it's intricacies so here is a link where you can study up on it for yourselves.

And please note there will be a short test to follow... I'm joking of course...
Happy Movie Clip Wednesday to all of you!

  6. I wait with baited breath as to what game is being played. I'm going with "Australian" rules footbal. Close to rugby but a just a bit different. I think. Jack Thompson is awesome. So was the movie "Breaker Morant". Best quote from the clip "just because she makes good scones doesn't mean she can run a cake factory." BTW, its a balmy -18 deg F this morning. Happy MCW

  9. Not familiar with this one... or indeed the rules of Aussie Football. What I do recall is that they wear incredibly short shorts :)

  11. Dear Madman
    Yep Aussie Rules...
Breaker Morant was another of Williamsons.
There are some great one liners in this movie. It has become an Aussie classic. Every so often they bring it back to the stage too.
I hope you stay well rugged up then!

    Dear Mitzi

"What happened to your flower post?"

You know how when you go to save something in Draft and clickerate Publish Post instead?... Yes? Well that's what happened.
The Flower Post will be up larer today...

    Dear K9
"from now on, whenever i decide to go off range, im gong to claim aussie rules. and by the way, i want MORE money!"

It's nice to see you. You do realise the extent you must go to to get a raise? Just so long as you're clear on the expectations..

I like the Thaught of acllin Aussie rule when you go Off road...
It's a bit like the 20 second rule for when I stuff up a tee shot in golf. If you can get the ball back on the tee in 20 seconds then the first attempt doesn't count!
I am such a shitty Golfer....

    Dear Joanna
" What I do recall is that they wear incredibly short shorts :)"
THat is the only thing that holds my intrest in the game.... When the fashion trends indicate a longer length in short...My enthusiasim tends to wane...
