Now Showing at "The Palais"....

Hello Dhaaarlings...

It's Wednesday again and you know what that means...

And again I must commend

Milk River Madman as he has once again excelled with his theme choice. He keeps banging on about running out of themes but never fails to step up to the tee.
The theme for Wednesday 1st December 2010 is...

"Movie you hated the first time you saw it but now like it"
(Oh... and a pinch and a punch for the first of the month)
I really had to think about the theme this week as there are very few movies that fit into this catagory for me. I either like a movie or I hate it from the get go and never allow it to re assault my senses with its awfulness again.
However... there is one movie that does fit this catagory for me...
And the first time I saw it... being quite a young pup.. found it to be a little terrifying... No words. Just this weird, well I thought it weird at the time...Until later expanding my horizons with a little culture..

The movie was set years into the future and as a kid you think... Gosh is that what I've got to look forward to?
A utopian world above, Factories deep underground full of slave labour, robots and in the end total destruction the grim reaper waiting for you?

Little did I realise back then that that pretty much sums up how the world works today... Anyway....
You guessed it...

And you can read all about it Here

And to think it was originally made by Fritz Lang in 1927.
I now present for your brief entertainment the shorts to...
Metropolis.

However having watched it again years later with a bit more worldly knowledge, experience and contextual understanding under my belt I could appreciate the movie and how remarkable it really is.
The Godfather of future sci fi movie makers...
I dips me hat to you Fritz...

Happy MCW

  6. WHow, Fritze surely made some real classics. "M" is still a haunting piece - with a young Peter Lorre. Lang's life is exemplary for a whole generation - from k.u.k. Austria-Hungary, via the catastrophe of WWI to Weimar's Berlin and than into emigration. While his former wife, the dreaded Thea von Harbou, made carriere in the brown establishment. It's years that I saw Metropolis; I heared that a coloured version is existing now, and some musician bought seemingly rights on the film, but I have no knowledge of this. Lang made some early films I only know the titles as Der müde Tod (The Tired Death) and Die Spinnen (The Spiders) - I would very much like to see them once.

  7. Loved this movie, but I never knew why. Probably my love of all things art deco and the set design alone is worth a watch every few years.

    Happy MCW!

  9. I used to have Boy Metropolis on video, it was about a shelter for homeless gay teens in Germany. But sadly I've never seen the original.

  11. I have never seen this movie so I'm not sure if it's a good choice. But you know, the whole time I'm watching this clip I'm thinking - everyone in this movie is dead. Pretty macabre I know.

    Happy MCW!
